2024 Presidential Election Debates Format

The General Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum or KPU) determined the debate format for presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2024 Presidential Election. In accordance with Article 275, paragraph (1) of Law 7/2017 concerning General Elections, the KPU will facilitate the debate between presidential and vice-presidential candidates as one of the campaign methods funded through the State Budget (APBN).

“The presidential and vice-presidential debates will be held a total of five times, with three debates for presidential candidates and two debates for vice-presidential candidates,” said August Mellaz, Head of the Socialization Division, Voter Education, and Public Participation at the General Election Commission (KPU), during a press conference on the readiness of the 2024 Presidential Election debates at the KPU office in Central Jakarta (11/12).”

August stated that, to ensure the smoothness of the debates, the KPU has conducted several Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to formulate themes, strategic issues, and technical aspects of implementing the presidential and vice-presidential debates. Additionally, the KPU has coordinated with the teams of each presidential and vice-presidential candidate and the mass media organizing the debates.

The debates will be held five times in Jakarta, each lasting for 150 minutes. The specific time allocated for the presidential and vice-presidential debates is 120 minutes.

The debates will be divided into six segments. The first segment includes the opening, reading of the rules, and the presentation of visions, missions, and work programs. The second and third segments involve a deeper exploration of visions, missions, and work programs. The fourth and fifth segments consist of question-and-answer sessions and responses. Finally, the sixth segment is the closing. []
