45.7 Percent of Elected Women DPR RI Members are Associated with Political Dynasties

The electability of female politicians in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) in the 2024 elections increased from the 2019 elections. Previously, in 2019, the number of women elected was 20.5 percent. Now there are 21.9 percent, or 127 women, who will sit in the Indonesian DPR, if we refer to the announcement of the interim election results read by the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU) on March 20, 2024.

Based on analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), of the 127 female politicians elected, 58 are associated with political dynasties. Below are the percentages for each party.

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP): 16 out of 27 or 59.3 percent of elected female legislative candidates (candidates) are associated with political dynasties.

  1. Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra): 11 out of 19 women, or 57.9 percent.
  2. NasDem Party: 12 out of 21 or 57.1 percent of female legislative candidates are associated with political dynasties.
  3. Golongan Karya Party (Golkar): 10 out of 20 or 50 percent women.
  4. National Mandate Party (PAN): 4 out of 8, or 50 percent, women.
  5. Democratic Party: 2 out of 9, or 22.2 percent, are women.
  6. Social Justice Party (PKS): 2 out of 9 women, or 22.2 percent.
  7. National Awakening Party (PKB): 1 in 14 or 7.1 percent women.

“What we mean by political dynasties are people who are related by blood or kinship to political officials who have served or are currently in office.” Indeed, the highest in terms of percentage is PDIP,” said the Head of the Department of Politics and Social Change, CSIS, Arya Fernandes, at the “Launching of the ‘Our Parliament’ Dashboard and Talkshow of Elected Young Legislative Members” at the Mulia Senayan Hotel on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

In total, there are 138 male and female legislative candidates elected to the DPR RI who are associated with political dynasties. The NasDem Party is the party with the most legislative candidates from political dynasties, namely 33.3 percent. Meanwhile, PKS has the fewest elected legislative candidates associated with political dynasties, with 11.3 percent.

The number of elected legislative candidates associated with political dynasties in each party is as follows:.

  1. NasDem Party: 23 of 69 elected legislative candidates, or 33.3 percent.
  2. PDIP: 30 of 110 legislative candidates were elected, or 27.3 percent.
  3. Golkar Party: 27 of 102 elected legislative candidates, or 26.5 percent.
  4. Gerindra Party: 22 of 86 elected legislative candidates, or 25.6 percent.
  5. Democratic Party: 9 of 44 elected legislative candidates, or 20.5 percent.
  6. PAN: 9 of 48 legislative candidates were elected, or 18.8 percent.
  7. PKB: 12 of 68 legislative candidates were elected, or 17.6 percent.
  8. PKS: 6 of 53 legislative candidates were elected, or 11.3 percent.

“38.4 percent of the elected DPR members who come from political dynasties are the children of political officials. Wives of political officials: 21.7 percent. Younger brother: 14.5 percent. Husband: 7.2 percent. Nephew 5.1 percent. “Others are 8 percent,” concluded Arya. []
