Members of Commission II Should Immediately Conduct Fit and Proper Test for KPU and Bawaslu New Members Candidates

The Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) asks members of Commission II of the National Parliament to immediately conduct fit and proper test to select the new members of the Election Commission (KPU) and Election Monitoring Body (Bawaslu). The term of office for the previous members of both institution will end in April 12th 2017.

“Members of the Parliament will take their recess period next week. As the consequence, they can only begin the fit and proper test in March. If they fail to conduct the test in March, there will be vacuum of power in KPU and Bawaslu. We don’t want that to happen,” says the Deputy Director of Perludem, Khoirunnisa Nur Agustyati, during a public discussion titled “Accelerate the Resolution for Judicial Reviews on Article 9 a Laws No.10/2016” in Jakarta (02/23).

Currently, there is a circulating rumor that members of Commission II are rejecting many candidates selected by the Special Team of Selection in the previous selection process. The reason being that majority of selected candidates are agreeing to propose a request for judicial reviews on Article 9 a Laws No.10/2016.

“Members of Commssion II should not be bothered by the request for judicial reviews. They should not confuse the request and the selection process,” says Fadli Ramadhanil, a researcher from Perludem.

The selection process for the new members of KPU and Bawaslu is an urgent matter and the government should not postpone the process.
