Bawaslu, KPU, and KPU Strengthen the Law Enforcement on Election Broadcasting Violations

The Election Commission (KPU), Election Monitoring Body (Bawaslu), and Indonesia Broadcasting Commission (KPI) sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate their authority to enforce the law regarding broadcasting activity during elections.

“I hope every stakeholder will use mass media to educate votersm not to commit electoral violation using the media instead. We have the Law No.10/2016 that we shall obey,” says the Chairman of KPU, Juri Ardiantoro, during the event “Establishing the Committee for Monitoring and Overseeing the Media, Broadcasting, and Campaign Ads” in Jakarta (11/11).

Broadcasting violations in elections are: overdue the ads duration, conducting campaign activity outside the campaign period, committing racist or blasphemous campaign, and black campaign.

In addition, the Chairman of KPI, Yuliandre Darwis, adds that media partisanship towards a certain candidate is also a form of violation.

“The fact is clear: all candidates use media to disseminate their program. However, with the Committee, we expect a more informative and balanced media coverage of the elections. We want a decent electoral campaign for the people. We will not hesitate to punish any violator of the election broadcasting law,” says Yuliandre.
