The General Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum or KPU) has set the schedule and themes for the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Election debates. According to Law 7/2017 on General Elections, there will be three debates for presidential candidates and two debates for vice-presidential candidates. The debates will be broadcasted by public frequency broadcasting institutions, both on television and radio.
“The presidential-vice presidential debates will be conducted a total of five times, with three debates for presidential candidates and two debates for vice-presidential candidates,” said August Mellaz, the Head of the Division of Socialization, Voter Education, and Public Participation at the KPU, during a press conference on the readiness of the Presidential Election debates in 2024 at the KPU office in Central Jakarta (12/11).
Here are the schedule and themes for the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Election debates:
First, the debate for presidential candidates will take place on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. It will be broadcasted live by Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) and Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). The debate theme includes governance, law, human rights, anti-corruption efforts, democracy strengthening, public service improvement, handling disinformation, and community harmony.
Second, the debate for vice-presidential candidates will take place on Friday, December 22, 2023. It will be broadcasted live by Trans Corp Group, Kompas TV, and BTV. The debate theme includes the economy, populism and digital issues, finance, investment, taxation, trade, management of the State Budget (APBN) and Regional Budget (APBD), infrastructure, and urban issues.
Third, the debate for presidential candidates will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024. It will be broadcasted live by MNC Group. The debate theme includes defense and security, international relations, and geopolitics.
Fourth, the debate for vice-presidential candidates will be on Sunday, January 21, 2024. It will be broadcasted live by Surya Citra Televisi Indonesia (SCTV), Indosiar, and Metro TV. The debate theme includes sustainable development, natural resources, environment, energy, food, agrarian issues, indigenous communities, and villages.
Fifth, the debate for vice-presidential candidates will be on Sunday, February 4, 2024. It will be broadcasted live by TV One, ANTV, Net TV, and Garuda TV. The theme includes social welfare, culture, education, information technology, health, employment, human resources, and inclusion. []
