Female Legislative Should Be Replaced by Other Female Politician

Women’s Voice Empowerment Movement (GPSP) and Go Forward Indonesian Women (MPI) propose a recommendation to the Special Committee for the new Elections Law Bill to include a provision that oblige political party to replace a resigned female parliament member with other female politician.

“Political party should replace a resigned female legislative with other female candidate who gained the next most votes in the same election,” says the Chairperson of GPSP, Endang Widyastuti Dungga, during a hearing session in the House of Representatives, Jakarta (01/08).

In addition, MPI also proposes another affirmative policy: if there are two or more candidates acquire the same amount of votes, then political party should prioritize the candidate with more equal votes distribution and female candidate first.

“In such a case, political party should prioritize the candidate with more equal votes distribution and the female candidate,” says a senior member of MPI, Yuda Irlang.

GPSP and MPI also propose a recommendation that there should be a 30 percent quota for women in the internal committee responsible for selecting which candidates should be included in the election race. Political party should be transparent and more affirmative to women participation in the selection process of candidates in political party.
