Golkar Supports the Idea to Reduce Seats Allocation per Electoral Area to 3-6 Seats

Golongan Karya (Golkar) Party supports the idea to reduce district magnitude to 3 to 6 seats for every electoral area (dapil). Golkar supports this idea because they agree to simplify the political party system in Indonesia.

“I think our district magnitude should be around 3 to 6 seats per dapil. More than that we will have extreme multiparty system,” says Rambe Kamarul Zaman, the Chief of Commission II of the Parliament in Jakarta (11/24).

During the discussion session about the new Election Law Bill, Rambe says he will strive for reforming the current election system and based his argument on the idea to simplify the current multiparty system. He expects a more moderate multiparty system. In order to achieve that, the government needs to reduce the current district magnitude.

“We need to simplify our multiparty system. We don’t want to go to the other direction (extreme multiparty). This is of the utmost importance,” says Rambe.

The new Election Law Bill that has just proposed by the government contains a regulation that states district magnitude shall be 3 to 10 seats per electoral area. This provision is similar with the regulation in the Law No.8/2012 on the Election of Nationa Parliament (DPR), Lower House of the Parliament (DPD), and Regional Parliament (DPRD) Members.
