The Law on Political Party, MD3, and Elections Should be Discussed Simultaneously

It would be better for the Special Committee for the discussion of the Law on Political Party; on People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Parliaments (DPRD), and the Lower House of the Parliament (DPD) or more familiarly known as MD3; and on Elections to discuss those three laws simultaneously.

“I do not agree to compile those three laws into one law. Each of those three topics should be regulated separately with a specific law. However, I agree if the Special Committee wants to discuss those three laws simultaneously,” says Titi Anggraini, the Executive Director of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), in Jakarta (12/02).

Titi highly appreciates the idea that Special Committee will discuss those three laws simultaneously. Simultaneous discussion will result in a more cohesive and consistent legal framework.

“For example, if we want to simplify our multiparty system, we would also want to reform the content of the MD3 Law besides Elections Law. This way, there will be a more cogent relationship between laws,” Titi says.

However, Titi says the Committee will only have so little time if they want to discuss the three laws simultaneously, especially in regards with the Elections Law.
