Five political parties in the Special Committee for the New Elections Law, which are the Democrat Party, the Grand Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), Unity and Development Party (PPP), National Mandate Party (PAN), and National Democrat Party (NasDem), are optimistic that the implementation of e-voting technology will simplify the process of polling, vote-counting, and vote-recapitulation in the 2019 Concurrent National Elections. The representatives of those five political parties say that the implementation of e-voting technology will reduce the time needed to perform the election.
The five parties are more concern about the vote counting process using the electronic device or e-counting. According to them, the implementation of e-counting technology will definitely reduce the time needed to perform the convoluted manual vote-counting process.
“E-counting technology is important to prevent any tampering or fraudulent activity during the convoluted vote-counting process. E-counting can also reduce the vote-counting time significantly,” says a member of the Special Committee from PPP, Amirul Tamim, during a hearing session at the Parliament House, South Jakarta (01/11).
In regards with e-counting, a member of the Special Committee from the Democrat Party, Fandi Utomo, proposes the implementation should also be conducted alongside with manual e-counting. This is necessary to prevent any public distrust or any complaint from political party who feel cheated during the vote counting process.
“This technology can help us. However, the implementation should be conducted alongside with manual counting. The most important things are impartiality and accountability,” says Fandi.
