The 2024 Election Has the Potential to Become a Legitimacy Crisis

The 2024 election has the potential to cause a legitimacy crisis in the election process and results. This was due to ethical violations by each election organizer and state administrator. In fact, both of them really determine the quality of democratic elections.

“This may be the first time that elections have not yet started; both the General Election Commission (KPU) and the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) have been convicted of ethical violations by the Honorary Council for General Election Organizers (DKPP),” said Ade Reza Hariyadi, Lecturer at Krisnadwipayana University, in the discussion entitled “Neutrality of State Officials in the 2024 Election” (26/12).

In the discussion held by the Jakarta Institute for Economic and Social Research, Education, and Information (LP3ES), Ade explained that the legal framework and legal certainty are important conditions for holding meaningful elections. According to him, through this, effective and fair law enforcement can run and provide public trust.

“The result is election participants who are competitive and compete in a fair and equal arena,” he added.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hamid, Chairman of the LP3ES Management Board, believes that the neutrality of the State Civil Service (ASN) allows competition to advance democracy. Because the public can select candidates from various aspects to produce strong leadership qualities,.

“A healthy democracy will produce leadership that has many benefits.” Conversely, if neutrality is not carried out, it will result in leadership that is not good for the public,” said Hamid.

Hamid said that ASN’s neutrality was the key to building a country and democracy that had long been initiated. For this reason, it is necessary to involve all levels of society in guarding the neutrality of ASN and the entire election process.
