The Voter Education Network for the People (JPPR) hopes that the 2024 Pilkada campaign will not be as brutal as the last 2024 election. JPPR noted several problems that may be repeated in the 2024 Pilkada but are not considered violations because they have not yet entered the campaign period, while enforcement must fulfill the elements of violations.
“If there are no rules, it is considered that there are no prohibitions; that is the weakness.” The next regional election should not be as brutal as yesterday’s election,” said JPPR Coordinator Nurlia Dian Paramita in an online discussion entitled “The Urgency of Improving Campaign Rules Towards the 2024 Regional Election” (27/6).
JPPR noted several problems during the campaign, such as the use of state instruments to support one candidate and the reckless installation of campaign props that disturbed road users. According to Nurlia, the KPU has removed regulations regarding the size of campaign props, especially banners.
“In the last election, banners were one of the things that election organizers could not control.” Election supervisors are confused about taking action because the rules are made in such a way as to pamper election participants,” he explained.
Furthermore, according to him, there are many campaign practices that do not reflect democratic values but are still carried out by election participants on the grounds that they do not fulfill the elements of campaign violations. According to him, this is due to the narrow definition of campaigns in the implementation of elections. []
